    History

    ONCE UPON A TIME...

This year, Francis Vandendorpe and the team from Snow & Ice Events NV will organise the 15th edition of the Ice Sculpture Festival. Throughout all these years, this exceptional winter event has been firmly anchored in the City of Bruges and represents a unique tourist attraction.

The Ice Sculpture Festival has become a permanent feature, enhancing the appealing end of year programme in the City of Bruges.

No fewer than 2,300,000 visitors have attended the festival in the past fifteen years. Its reputation and international recognition is such that the initiator and producer, “Snow & Ice Events”, has been approached for a number of years now to create similar productions elsewhere in Europe, as well as in Belgium, from concept to implementation and operation. The expertise that has been built up over all these years is undoubtedly a significant factor in this respect.

For example, at the invitation of the City of Paris, the Festival has been organised twice at the eco-thermal pavilion on the prestigious Avenue des Champs-Elysées as part of the international Christmas market where “ICE MAGIC” welcomed no fewer than 270,000 visitors. Last year, the City of Brussels also invited “ICE MAGIC” to organise an impressive event based entirely on Belgian comic strip heroes as part of the “Winter Wonders” on the Paleizenplein area, “Place des Palais”. The 42 different scenes were admired by no fewer than 160,000 visitors. So it will come as no surprise that there is interest in “Ice Magic” in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey.

Today, “ICE MAGIC” is more than just a name. It represents an original concept, a professional development and an international quality label. So, from this year on, the name of the Festival in Bruges will also be changed to “ICE MAGIC”. Research has revealed that “ICE MAGIC” is a strong international brand name not only with regard to its awareness but also in visual terms.

Bruges is the birthplace and home base of “ICE MAGIC” and the Festival therefore continues to be inextricably linked to the city.

A FANTASY WORLD FULL OF MAGIC, MYSTERY, ICE AND SNOW!

“Frozen”, “Ice Wonderland”, “Ice World”, “Ice Age 3”, “Ice Fantasy”, “Ice Planet”, “Ice Palace”, “Magical Wonders”... all themes that have succeeded in enchanting the young and old alike over the years. The artists’ power of imagination is directly related to the visitor’s empathy and experience, which takes the latter on an adventure in a magical setting and a temperature of around -6° C.

The power of “Ice Magic” lies in the recognisability of characters, scenes and décor as well as in the fragile material that is ice, which is used to produce a short-lived - and therefore unique - exhibition.
